Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT)

Welney Wetland Centre

The WWT Welney Wetland Centre takes in 1,000 acres of the Northern-most part of the Ouse Washes, Britain’s largest area of seasonally-flooded land. The eco-friendly visitor centre overlooks an additional 300 acres of restored wetlands.

In the winter it hosts thousands of swans and tens of thousands of ducks, whilst in summer the site is transformed into grassy meadows with wildflowers coming into bloom, dragonflies darting along the ditches and yellow wagtails following the herds of cattle. The commentated swan feeds in winter take advantage of the centrally-heated main hide as a vantage point for visitors to get closer to migratory swans and ducks. During this time of the year the floodlit evening feeds offer a unique chance to see your very own swan lake.  Guided walks in summer help with identification and get you closer to the seasonal highlights.

The reserve supports breeding populations of black-tailed godwit, redshank, snipe, little ringed plover, avocet, marsh harrier, gadwall, garganey, teal, skylark, yellow wagtail and reed bunting. There is an abundance of other wetland creatures and plants including, water voles, damselflies, moths, bats, purple loosestrife and the custard-coloured yellow swathes of meadow-rue.

The visitor centre provides all the amenities you could need to make a comfortable day out in the Fens exploring the wetland habitat, including cafe, gift shop, free electric scooter and manual wheelchair hire, hearing induction loop and toilets. Most of the site is fully accessible with lifts and ramps apart from the further reaches of the reserve.

Admission charges apply or you can support WWT further and become a member.
