Norfolk County Council - Norfolk Reading Pathway

One in six adults struggles with reading. Research shows that when people read for pleasure they benefit from far greater opportunities in everyday life, education and employment.

The Norfolk Reading Pathway is a free programme which is available across Norfolk and is open to any adult who would like support to become a more confident reader.

We match learners with one of our volunteer coaches and they work through the ‘Yes we can read' handbook together. Coaching sessions are usually weekly for up to an hour.

The Pathway is available in all Norfolk Libraries. If you know someone who needs support or would just like to find out more, contact your local library or email nrp@norfolk.gov.uk.

Moving on from the Reading Pathway

There are loads of opportunities for beginner readers to practice and build their skills along the way, as well as a range of progression opportunities once they’ve completed or even to run alongside their learning when they begin to feel more confident. Reading coaches can encourage and support learners to consider the options and decide what they’d like to do.

Free GCSE and functional skills courses 

Norfolk Adult Learning run free English and maths GCSE classes for adults in Norfolk and functional skills courses in English and maths.

Functional skills qualifications give you essential, practical skills in maths and English and the vast majority of employers recognise a Level 2 functional skill as an equivalent to a 4 or C graded GCSE. They will give you the necessary skills that you need at work, at home or in your community.

Reading Ahead 

Do you want to read more, but struggle to find the time? Have you lost the reading habit and need a little inspiration? The Reading Ahead project challenges adults to pick six reads and record, rate and review them in a personal virtual reading diary. After completing the diary you’ll receive a certificate or digital badge.

The programme isn't just about books - newspapers, magazines, poems and websites all count too! The aim is that participants challenge themselves to try something new and discover that reading can be a pleasure in the process.
