British Red Cross - Assisted Discharge Service

The British Red Cross is helping the NHS to provide time limited support to people this winter through the British Red Cross Assisted Discharge Service.

Our skilled and experienced teamcan provide you with the practical and emotional support on the day of your discharge from the hospital.

The service is currently available until the 31st March 2021 and aims to help the NHS support patients by:

  • Facilitating prompt and safe hospital discharges
  • Providing escorts to and from hosptials and GP surgeries for routine appointments/inoculations (including seasonal flu and Covid-19 vaccinations)
  • Offering practical and emotional support to NHS patients

You can access the service by speaking to: nursing staff, occupational therapists, doctors or ward coordinators.

We can help with:

  • Escorting home
  • Settling in at home after discharge
  • Offering conversation and support
  • Essential shopping
  • Collecting prescriptions or doctor's letters
  • Support in finding and accessing other services

Unfortunately we cannot help with:

  • Performing any personal care
  • Giving medication or changing dressings
  • Being a substitute for any statutory service
  • Offering long-term befriending services¬†
