Front of House Volunteers Needed For King’s Lynn’s New Performing Arts Hub

We are looking for volunteers to help us front of house at our new performing arts hub, The Workshop, at the center of King’s Lynn, on Vancouver Quarter. This is an incredible way of getting to know our space and team, whilst participating in the workings of a professional arts organization. With a mix of day-time and evening shifts up for grabs, this is a brilliant opportunity for someone looking for experience in the industry or a productive and vibrant way of filling their spare time. There will also be opportunities to assist with productions and classes.

Opportunity type: Voluntary, set shifts preferred 

Time commitment: Minimum of 5 hours per week.

Interview & Training: Following the receiving of a CV, reference and cover letter saying why you wish to join us, you will be invited to an interview/trial shift.  If successful you will be required to arrange a DBS check and partake in The Workshop’s volunteer induction process.

Safeguarding: Volunteers will be subject to enhanced DBS checks before any volunteering can commence.

Progression: Experience and skills gained will suit those looking to work in Arts Delivery, Community Arts, Arts Education, Youth Theatre, Hospitality and Youth Work.

 

About Us

The Workshop is a hub for performing arts located in King’s Lynn which supports the creative journeys of artists, participants and audiences. It operates under The Garage Trust, which is a registered charity.  The charity has a strong emphasis on engaging those with least access to the arts, particularly young people.

About the Opportunity

We are looking for motivated and trustworthy individuals 18+ who have a desire to help others and have an interest in the arts. You would join our busy team as a volunteer, assisting our participants with booking places on classes and accessing our programme. You will also work with and on behalf of our Participation Manager, opening/closing the building and cashing up where necessary.

You are responsible for providing information for DBS checking and payment for the check.

Alongside this you will be advised of training sessions administered by The Workshop, as and when necessary - most notably child protection and first aid.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • To welcome participants in a warm yet efficient manner.
  • To help sell and assign class places on the box office, handling transactions between The Workshop and the participants.
  • To ensure health and safety laws are abided by at all times.
  • To ensure capacity is not exceeded.
  • To communicate with The Workshop employees on any concerns regarding participant, tutor, company or volunteer wellbeing.
  • To participate in promotional activities, such as flyering, when needed.
  • To identify the needs, wants and patterns of individual participants and direct them to the appropriate classes and the Participation Programme Manager.
  • To ensure the front desk and its valuables are not left on show, unsecured or unattended.
  • To ensure that the venue and shows are accessible, sensitive to audience needs and impairments, wherever possible.
  • To approach all tasks with a ‘can do’ attitude.
  • To ask appropriate questions in order to be able to complete tasks to the best of your ability.
  • To open and/or close the building and front of house on occasions when The Workshop employees are unable to. This includes locking up and turning off appliances at the end of the day.
  • To abide by GDPR and Data Protection Laws.
  • You are responsible for providing information for DBS checking. If you do not have a current First Aid Certificate, please ensure the Participation Programme Manager is made aware of this.
  • Participate in training sessions administered by The Workshop, as and when necessary - most notably child protection and first aid. We will share with you other opportunities for CPD that are relevant.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Consistent availability on term time week days.
  • Reliable and Trustworthy.
  • Confident in verbal communication.
  • Ability to use own initiative.
  • Flexible availability for occasional in holiday and weekend work.
  • Ability to take reasonable steps to ensure the safety and well-being of children and young people, as well as the audience in general.
  • Always act and be seen to act in the children and young people’s best interests.
  • Treat children and young people with respect and dignity.
  • Ability to regularly liaise with The Workshop employees.
  • Quick at learning new computer systems and entering information into them.
  • A keen interest in the creative arts (dance, drama, music, etc).
  • A commitment to the aims and objectives of The Workshop.

Desirable

  • Experience or qualification in supporting people with learning disabilities, or physical or sensory impairments.
  • Knowledge of alternative communication methods, (eg. British Sign Language, Makaton, symbol communication systems).
  • Understanding of GDPR.
  • Experience or qualification in performing arts.
