Rogue Trader Alerts

Rogue Trader Alert – Cold callers offering to repaint car park lines – 18 July 2019

We are asking residents involved with churches, community centres and village halls in Norfolk to be aware after receiving reports of cold callers offering to repaint car park lines.

The cold callers are claiming the ‘plasticised paint’ is ‘surplus’ from other jobs ‘nearby’ and can be offered at a discounted price as it ‘otherwise will only get recycled at the end of the day’. The cold caller will then state a low price per unit of measurement.

If the work is agreed to following completion, an invoice is then presented for a much higher figure as the unit of measurement changes, although this cold caller will claim this was what was said initially.

We advise never deal with cold callers looking to do work on or around properties.

If you are looking to have this type of work done only deal with reputable companies that have been researched and having obtained a written quotation first.

Anyone concerned about possible rogue trader activity in Norfolk can contact us through our partners the Citizens Advice consumer helpline via their online reporting form or by telephone on 03454 04 05 06.

Rogue Trader Alert: Door to door fish sellers – 10 July 2019

We are warning residents to be vigilant after receiving reports of two men selling fish door to door.

Reported incidents in the last week have come from the Attleborough, Shipdam and Great Ellingham areas.

In the past these types of sellers have been known to use high pressure sales tactics and there have been issues with the quality of the fish being offered, whether the type of fish is as claimed, and whether it has been appropriately stored for transportation.

It is possible these sellers may continue to move on to other locations within Norfolk.

Do not deal with cold callers and never be pressurised into buying on the doorstep.

If you are approached by these sellers or see them in your area please report it to us via our partners the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or to Norfolk Police on 101.

Rogue Trader Alert – Doorstep and telephone cold callers regarding solar panels – 4 July 2019

Residents with solar panels on their property need to watch out for for doorstep and telephone cold callers who appear to be targeting homes with solar panels.

The cold callers are making a number of claims regarding existing systems, often stating that the company that installed the panels originally have ’ceased trading’ and they have taken over.  The claims have then included:

  • That the solar panel system needs servicing, with charges of up to £600 being made for this ‘service’ which may include cleaning the panels
  • That a ‘warranty check’ or ‘maintenance’ on the panels is required by the new company. If allowed access to the panels they then attempt to sell ‘add-on’ products such as replacement invertors or long-term service contracts
  • That existing systems need to be ‘assessed’ to ensure they are not ‘at risk of fire’.  If access is allowed the ‘assessor’ will claim that ‘isolator switches’, ‘black boxes’ or other modifications are ‘urgently required to prevent fire’.  Costs for this work are then quoted, in a recent incident a homeowner was told this work would be in excess of £2,000

Always be very wary of any approach made in a doorstep or telephone cold call and never agree to services, to having work done or for someone to visit your home if approached in this manner.

Solar panel owners should always talk to their supplier before allowing any work or ‘maintenance’ to take place on their panels.  Generally a solar panel system does not need servicing but it may benefit from being cleaned if the panels are dirty.

Traders who work on a solar panel system should be members of the Solar Trade Association, and any work on the electrics of a solar panel system should be carried out by a qualified electrician.

Suitably qualified electricians can be found on the Norfolk Trusted Trader website or via the Electrical Safety First website.
